Seminar description
The future of design excellence requires a holistic approach, addressing the interdependence among people, buildings, infrastructure, and the environment. This program will examine health, safety, and welfare through the lens of the multiple measures included in the Framework for Design Excellence. Two COTE Top Ten Award projects, designed by diverse architect and consultant teams reframe sustainability as a primary driver of health, safety, and welfare innovation in the built environment. The session will give participants an opportunity to explore projects that are on previously developed or brownfield land as well as projects that represent new construction and addition/remodels.
Learning objectives
- Develop an understanding of how firms can create partnerships to achieve successful sustainable measures throughout the design process, construction documentation, and a COTE Award application.
- Examine various technology and documentation strategies that aid project teams in developing sustainable designs that improve the impact of buildings on global carbon emissions, indoor air quality and ecosystem health. Attendees will learn about different approaches which they can then relate to their own firms’ work.
- Recognize the importance of human interaction with the built environment and how this spurs health, safety, and welfare along with a sustainable way of being. Attendees will learn about Design for Discovery and user interaction within sustainable design.
- Evaluate and generalize how the COTE Top Ten Award criteria and guidelines (now AIA Framework for Design Excellence) can serve as a template for impacting the trajectory and workflow of a firm beyond the project and how research can play a part.
Presenters
Jeryl Aman, AIA, is an architect and associate with MSR Design. Jeryl has 19 years of experience integrating the values and aspirations of clients into constructed experiences that promote wellness and wonder. After 12 years in New York adapting existing buildings for new programs, he now works towards MSR Design’s strategic goal to lead a regenerative architectural design practice. Jeryl practices architecture from multiple approaches to synthesize the conceptual principles, logistical execution, and tectonics of construction into meaningful spaces that contribute positively to the environment. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the Pratt Institute School of Architecture.
Leighton Deer, PE, HBDP, LEED AP BD+C, is a senior mechanical engineer and arts and community engineering market leader at HGA. He is an architectural engineer with nearly 20 years of experience designing high-performance mechanical systems for arts centers, cultural institutions, and education clients. He is passionate about the art and science of great building design and uses that passion to create engineered systems that form high-performance, technically sound, maintainable, and sustainable building facilities. He is a past president of the Minnesota Chapter of ASHRAE, a two-time recipient of ASHRAE’s First Place Technology Award, and a licensed mechanical engineer.
Maura Rockcastle, PLA, ASLA, is a landscape architect, co-founder, and principal of TEN x TEN. With a background in printmaking and sculpture, Maura balances a rigorous approach to leadership and design innovation with a conceptual sensibility rooted in process. Maura’s professional experience is focused on cultural, institutional, and complex public realm projects. Her work has received national awards for design excellence, preservation, and innovation. In 2015, she co-founded TEN x TEN to build a practice committed to horizontal co-authorship, radical transparency, and curiosity. TEN x TEN’s mission is to co-create compassionate, immersive, and resilient spaces that confront the issues of our time.
Moderator Thea Rozenbergs, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, is a senior architect and sustainable design professional at Alliiance with 16 years of professional experience. She is a creative problem-solver with a passion for envisioning a collaborative, thriving future. Her 4 of 4 practice focuses on a holistic approach to integrating sustainability and resilience from goal setting through development of design details and specification integration. Her research includes commercial plug loads, sustainable materials, embodied carbon, and regenerative water systems. Thea’s architectural practice areas include master planning, science and technology, manufacturing, higher education, and commercial typologies. She is current co-chair of the AIA Minnesota Committee on the Environment.
Glenn Waguespack, AIA, is an architect and design principal at HGA who has collaborated over the last 20 years with public sector and nonprofit clients to uncover surprising, creative, and sustainable design solutions. As a firmwide sustainability steering committee member, Glenn advocates for a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to design through visioning and goal setting on projects using the AIA Framework for Design Excellence. His recent work includes the zero energy Westwood Hills Nature Center in St. Louis Park, Brookview Community Center in Golden Valley, and Cottage Grove Regional Park’s Ravine Landing Trailhead, Minnesota’s first cross-laminated timber (CLT) building. Glenn holds a Master of Architecture from the Southern California Institute of Architecture.
