Saint Paul Celebrates Top Preservation Efforts

27th annual Heritage Preservation Awards and Mayor Chris Coleman recognize the
revitalization of Saint Paul’s history in 2017

SAINT PAUL – On Tuesday, July 18, the Heritage Preservation Commission of the City of Saint Paul and the Saint Paul Chapter of the American Institute of Architects hosted the 27th annual Saint Paul Heritage Preservation Awards Ceremony. 

The event recognized projects, individuals and organizations that enhance and celebrate Saint Paul’s cultural resources through their preservation work. It is estimated that over 100 people attended the event.

“It’s great to see our community members and organizations so committed to the preservation and restoration of Saint Paul’s rich history. I am proud to live in a city that focuses on preserving our past as we move into the future,” said Mayor Chris Coleman.

Awards included:

  • Community Education Award – They Played for the Love of the Game: Untold Stories of Black Baseball in Minnesota, Frank White, Minnesota Historical Society Press
  • Vote of Confidence Award – Palace Theatre
  • Rehabilitation Award – Saint Paul, Minneapolis, Manitoba Railway Company Pattern Shop Building
  • Cultural Heritage Award – Frogtown Park and Farm
  • Rehabilitation Award – The Security Building, 2395 University Avenue
  • Historic Landscape and Streetscape Award – Como Streetcar Pedestrian Bridge
  • Cultural Heritage Award – Onward Central: The First 150 Years of Central High School
  • New Construction Award – W.O. Washburn House, 1082 Summit Avenue
  • Adaptive reuse Award – Rayette Building, 261 Fifth Street East
  • Community Organization Award – Hope Engine Company No. 3, 1 Leech Street South

About the Palace Theatre
In 2013, the City of Saint Paul announced that they would be renovating the 1916 Palace Theatre into a 2,800 capacity live music venue for contemporary artists. Crews spent over a year preserving the original architectural elements and modernizing its amenities.

The Vote of Confidence Award recognizes a high-quality project that supports preservation values and the Saint Paul community.
