The 2012 Global Practices in Architecture Lecture Series brings expert educators and practitioners from around the world to share unique perspectives and insights into the Architecture profession. Dr. Lindsay Bremner is an award-winning architect and writer who has published, lectured, and exhibited widely on the transformation of Johannesburg since the end of apartheid. In her design work, Dr. Bremner takes on projects with socially or culturally transformative agendas, including a design for a Bangladeshi cyclone shelter and the rebuilding of the Sans Souci Cinema in Kliptown, Soweto. Her current research, Folded Ocean: Fluid Territories in the Indian Ocean World, investigates the impact of global mobility, transnationalism and environmental change on landscape and settlement around the Indian Ocean. Dr. Bremner holds a B.Arch from the University of Cape Town and received M.Arch and DSc. Arch degrees from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. She is current Director of Architectural Research at the University of Westminster, and previously Professor of Architecture in the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia.

The recent rise of interest in public space is part a growing movement that recognizes the importance of the commons—valuable assets that belong to all of us like streets and parks, water and biodiversity, the Internet and human culture. Jay Walljasper will discuss how ideas about the commons will have profound influence on how we view and practice design throughout the 21st Century. Walljasper chronicles stories from around the world that point us toward a greener, more equitable and more enjoyable future. He is author of the Great Neighborhood Book (2007) and All That We Share: A Field Guide to the Commons (2011). Jay is editor of OnTheCommons.org, a Senior Fellow at Project for Public Spaces and an Associate of the Citistates Group. His writing has appeared in National Geographic Traveler, Planning, Preservation, Utne Reader, Planetizen and Landscape Architecture online.

The 2012 Global Practices in Architecture Lecture Series brings expert educators and practitioners from around the world to share unique perspectives and insights into the Architecture profession. Known for architecture that is spatially complex and structurally innovative, Dr. Hitoshi Abe is one of the the most important architects in Japan. His firm, Atelier Hitoshi Abe, has designed well-known project ranging from the Miyagi stadium (2000) and the Reihoku community hall, which received the 2003 Architectural Institute of Japan award, to the The Kanno Museum of Art near Sendai, Japan. Dr. Abe earned his M.Arch. from SCI-ARC in Los Angeles in 1988 and his Ph.D. from Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan in 1993. His decade-long distinguished career as a leader in education began at the Tohoku Institute of Technology (Sendai, Japan) where he taught from 1994 to 2007. He is currently professor and chair of the UCLA Department of Architecture and Urban Design.
