Town Hall Town Hall Forum - Thursday, September 25
Catch the Train To a Livable Community
During the third annual Town Hall Forum on Thursday, September 25, we will again delve into a specific livable community topic. In years prior we explored livable cities with Ben Lee, FAIA, and metropolitan refill with William Morrish. This year, based on one of AIA’s 10 principles for livable communities: varying transportation options, we’ve invited Ambassador Richard N. Swett, FAIA, to talk about the role transportation plays in the creation of livable communities. The discussion will consider the leadership that is needed and explore the process that has been used in creating several successful domestic and international examples. Homes by Architects Homes by Architects Tour
Join us as 29 architect-designed homes in the Twin Cities area open their doors for one weekend in September. The tour, created by the American Institute of Architects Minnesota, promises to be truly stand-alone, showcasing how an architect-designed home is the product of a different process. See the tour web site now at homesbyarchitects.org.

Preservation Reason Enough for Preservation?
The striking image (at right) of Steven Holl’s University of Iowa Art Building under water and our local Peavey Plaza’s fate led to our latest blog entry. You can also look forward to reading more about Peavey Plaza in the upcoming September/October issue of Architecture Minnesota and continuing discussions on the blog. Is exceptional design, such as Peavey or the other treasures of modernism like Frank Lloyd Wright’s Alvin Miller House, reason enough for preservation? Weigh in at http://aia-mn.blogspot.com.

AIA Minnesota’s 25-Year Award The Breck Chapel wins AIA Minnesota’s 25-Year Award
The Breck Chapel of the Holy Spirit in Golden Valley, MN, designed by John Cuningham, FAIA, and John Quiter, AIA, of Cuningham Group Architecture, is the recipient of the 2008 AIA Minnesota 25-Year Award. Established by AIA Minnesota in 1981, the 25-Year Award recognizes exemplary architectural projects that have withstood the test of time. Jurors for this year’s 25-Year Award were Phillip Koski, AIA, of Leo A. Daly; College of Design faculty member Marc Swackhamer, AIA; and Roxanne Nelson, AIA, of Target Architecture. Walk the Walk Architects Walk the Walk
There’s been a lot of talk about changes in our climate lately. CO2 emissions, dwindling resources, and energy usage are growing concerns in every walk of life. AIA Architects, in particular, want to address those concerns. We strongly believe that the time for talk has passed, and now it is time to walk the walk. Learn more about the national campaign.
